Camosun College

Lab 1
Introduction

Dr. R. G. Tonks

Let's do a couple of things this week to get used to this Desire 2 Learn (D2L) system and to get introduced to each other and the field of psychology.

Have a look around the D2L system.    Click on the e-mail system, the discussion board system and see how they work.

Play around. We will use the e-mail and discussion board system a great deal so try the following.

1. Practice with the email system

Open MS Word. Create a small file that provides a brief introduction of yourself to the class. Tell us something about you and / or why you are taking this course.  Save it somewhere that is safe (like your Locker on the upper index bar) in a folder (like Psyc 201) where you can find it in the future. Next, send this file as an attachment to yourself in the D2L e-mail system.

While in the email system, check your inbox and open the email you just sent to yourself, download the attachment and open it in Word. [got that? - you have just reversed the process in sending].  Let me know if you need any assistance. This is something that we will do more of in the future and it should help you to become familiar with the steps in uploading and downloading with D2L. This is a process we will use in the drop box where you will attach and download your written assignments.

2. Practice with D2L Discussion Board
[there are three parts here; do them all at once and put information in one posting.]

2-1. Go into the D2L discussion board system. Create a posting with the subject "Lab 1" (but don't send it yet). Next, copy the introduction that you sent to yourself in the first part of this Lab into your new discussion board message so that you can send it to the class. Along with this introduction also attach a picture of yourself or something that interests you.  But before you send it off....

2-2. Do a search for some topic relative to psychological research. Most people these days seem to prefer Google: http://www.google.com but you can use any search engine. When you find an interesting site, something reporting research findings, copy the web address or URL. You can do this by left clicking on it, selecting it, right click, copy and then you have it in a "clipboard." Now go into the D2L discussion board system.

Copying your interesting web address into the message box of the new posting from part 2-1 above,  and then write a brief summary of what we might learn by visiting this site. Try to identify what the research questions was and what evidence (if any) is used to justify it.

2-3. Post the above message. Come back later to discussion board and read your posting and those of others in the class.
